Good review, Stephen. I think the iPad is neat, but that's about it.

They say, in business, the trick is to find a need and fill it. It seems that the iPad fills a need for something bigger than an iPhone, but smaller than a Macbook. I think they could have done much better, offering a touch screen version of a full featured laptop, maybe even a netbook equivalent. This thing just sounds like another fancy gadget for the I-gotta-have-it Apple fanbois.

The iPhone is great, even with it's inability to multi-task or the substandard carrier it saddles Apple customers with. (Ironic, considering the Apple customer experience, that they would partner with a sluggard like AT&T, but I digress.) This just seems like a bigger iPhone that doesn't make calls and accelerates the race to the limits of what the iPhone platform can do.

I think the real measure of success will be seeing how many people who buy the first generation rush right out to buy the second generation in a year because now it has a camera in it. :shrug

The other reason I don't need one, is because of the iPhone. I can get an iPod touch, and have Apps work with one hand still free. They will need to make a unique app that appeals to the iPad, and it will need to be impressive enough to become a feature.

Regardless, I would wait to see what the next iteration of the device will be.

You're still missing a big piece of magic.

A netbook won't play "apps". Only Touches and iPhones... And now iPads. It is a PSP and Nintendo DS killer. Free to $0.99 to $5.99 games? Win.

Will that be enough to save it? I hope so. This is what the future should look like.

Great review.

This is one of those products that I'm going to have to try to justify to myself. Nonetheless, I suspect I'll be one of the very early adopters. My gut is that I'll get the one without the 3G so I won't be tempted to add the service later. Also, as long as I have my iphone in my pocket, I don't feel it's a big deal. Same with storage space.

Now - if it could do tethering...
